Toastmaster Ice Breaker Tips and a little more about me…

German icebreaker Polarstern

Image via Wikipedia

I don’t want to make my “About Me” page too long to read, thus I am creating this long overdue post that will allow readers to know more about my family and me. 1 more step for me being transparent about myself for all to get to know me better.

I am glad to use my Toastmaster Ice Breaker speech because it gives a short and concise overview about what my life has been like. I decided to use the Timeline format to draft my first Toastmaster speech as I found it easier to think and introduce my life since birth in a sequential manner. It was pretty tough to squeeze 19 years of happenings into a 6 minutes speech but I guess I had to cut to the chase and give a rough overview of my life. I tried hard to fuse humour with certain facts by using visuals and anecdotes carefully and casually prompting some laughs once in a while. All these made the speech less dry and more interesting and memorable. By doing so, I received good reviews by the evaluator that day. Well, I shall let the video speak for itself. Do comment if you like it or not or things that I can improve on.

How was it? Sorry if the sound quality isn’t top notch, I was quite far away from the camera and refrained from shouting. Hopefully it’s audible enough for you guys to catch the words though. Still, I hope you all enjoyed it and have gotten to know me a little better at least.

There were other ideas that I thought about for giving a Ice Breaking Speech, especially for Toastmasters. If you happen to chance upon my blog because you were searching how to write a Toastmaster Ice Breaking Speech, here are some ideas in addition to the Timeline idea that I used for mine. Great ideas to jolt your mind to brainstorm on how to write a ice breaking speech. Here goes…

  1. What’s current? -- You can speak about what your current situation is right now in life. You could include things like your current favourite hobby (which might be the same as before), your current job (since job hopping is in fashion nowadays), your relationships, your financial health etc.
  2. Strengths, Weaknesses and Improvements -- Typically, one can assess and reflect about him or herself with a speech. By reflecting, one will let others know more about thyself. Why not share your strengths, weaknesses and things you think you can improve on?
  3. What’s your passion? -- Have you found your passion yet? If you have, how did you find it and how did it develop to become a real passion? Outlining and creating a story out of what you love most will be interesting and heartfelt. You are talking about your passion after all.
  4. What’s Next? -- Besides talking about what’s current, you can also add on with “What’s Next”. Any plans for the future? What do you intend to do? You can create a speech outlining your aspirations, goals and inspirations that drive you to have a vision of your future.
  5. Learning from Experience -- Are there any experiences that have shaped your life? What have you experienced that made you who you are today? What influence has your experiences from studying, working, coping with stress, family, growing up etc have on you? Ponder Ponder, reflect.

These are a few out of the many ideas that you can use for an Ice Breaker Speech. Hope it helps. Wishing you all the best in sharing more about yourself. Do it and do it well. Make it fun!

    With Love,
    Kelvin

Reflecting on 2009

What happened in 2009 for me?
2009 to me was a lucky year. I got by this year without any trouble. Nothing major that is. I achieved what I needed to achieve in my studies. Graduated with the diploma and grades I desired to get from the start. Now, I am stuck in a buffer period [...]

What the mask?

A mask. As an object, it is a piece of artwork for the face. Coming in various forms, expressions, colours and sometimes, weird shapes. Figuratively speaking, a mask is something that one hides behind. A veneer, disguise or pretense. It is something to conceal, camouflage or act as a facade for one’s true self. We [...]

Time gone, bad habits form…

This weekend was a long weekend. Usually they are 2 days, Saturday and Sunday, this one included the Friday which means 3 days. It's 5pm on Sunday and I guess I haven't really achieved much this week in terms of work, productivity or earning any money. If this continues, I know I will be regretting [...]
